Eden Prairie, Minnesota is a small town in the state of Minnesota. The population was 5,898 at the 2000 census. It is located in Dunn County. Eden Prairie is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and has a total population of 953,475 as of 2017. The community was founded in 1881 by Methodists from Illinois as a farming community for their members who had left that state to follow Jesus Christ. In 1932, Eden Prairie became an incorporated municipality with its own government and school system. The town's name comes from the Garden of Eden which was located near the original site of Eden Prairie Township (now part of Bloomington). The township took its name from nearby Eden Park, one of several local communities developed around what would become Eden Prairie. In 1984, electrical service began to be provided to all residents within city limits through the City Services Area Plan (CSA). That same year saw the opening of what would be named after then-Mayor Don Senterstrom – Senterstrom Place Shopping Center. Originally known as "Mr."Senterstrom's," it opened on December 2, 1984 and quickly became one of downtown Minneapolis' most popular shopping destinations with its wide variety of stores including Sears, JCPenney and Macy's department stores as well as a large number of independent businesses such as Gift Shop Village and Winnie's World Markets. Eden Prairie is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and is home to both the University of Minnesota–Duluth and Marshawn Lynch NFL football team. Eden Prairie was founded on November 6, 1858 by Captain John Forrest, who named it after the Garden of Eden in the Bible. According to legend, Adam and Eve were brought here from Illinois by railcar on October 12, 1859. The first store in town opened that year. In 1865, a Methodist church site was bought at Third and Lyndale streets for $1,000 dollars cash; construction began on what would become First Lutheran Church (now Park Street United Methodist). The first school in town was built on Second Street near Center Avenue in 1872-73 by Lewis Hickey and his son-in-law Phebe Hickey. It became Hickey School until 1938 when it became Stroud School District No 1 High School under annexation by Duluth Public Schools (the current name). In 1886-87 a new cotton gin was built west of town on County Road M (later State Highway 6) adjacent to present day Forest Park Boulevard; this helped start what would become one of Eden Prairie's most important economic activities – cotton farming – which continues to this day. This also helped spur development along much of Forest Park Boulevard between I-35W and County Road M into today's downtown area with its many shops and restaurants as well as One City Place mall located northwest of downtown across I-35W from Pioneer Hall museum headquarters where local history exhibits are currently being exhibited
The town of Eden Prairie was founded in 1854 by John L. Eden and his wife, Fannie. The first post office was established in 1855. In 1876, the town became a city and changed its name to Minneapolis.
