During World War I, eastcentral Minnesota served as an epicenter of military activity due to its strategic location within easy reach of both Chicago and St Louis. Some of the most famous battles fought in this time period were at Spalding Field near Minneapolis (1914), Rosebud Ranch near Stillwater (1915), and White Sands Ridge near Hibbing (1918).
