East Bethel is a town in Hubbard County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 388 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Norwegian settlers in 1858. East Bethel's slogan is "The Birthplace of American Christianity." The first settler to arrive in what is now East Bethel was Nils Olsen, who arrived on a horse and wagon in 1858. The town site was surveyed in 1862 by Ole Christiansen, and named for Danish theologian Peder Claus Hansen; however, the plat only included the present-day east side of the street that leads to Saint John's Lutheran Church (now part of First United Methodist Church). In 1864, Jonas Sørensen set up a store and post office at what is now southwest corner of Court Street and Elm Street; this location would later become the heart of the town. In 1865, Anders Larsen married Hilda Jensdatter Gjerding from Odense and started farming around what is now northeast corner of Court Street and Elm Street. By 1870, he had four children: Hilda Larsen (1871–1972), Anders Larsen (1872–1957), Ole Severin Larsen (1875–1948) and Karen Marie Larsdatter Gjerding (1877–1964). In 1886 Major General George Armstrong Custer passed through Hubbard County on his way to Ft. Laramie during the Dakota Sioux War; upon his arrival in East Bethel, he stopping at an old farmhouse on State Road 6 near today's southeast corner of Court Street and Elm Streets. This house would be used as headquarters for a day while Generals Custer & Spencer were conferring with local militia about their plans for attacking Council Camp outside Rosebud next day on July 24th 1890. A plaque marking this event can still be found inside St. John's Lutheran Church east side entranceway adjacent to restrooms/toilets area where front steps once stood outdoors until 1992 when new building interior replaced them as part of rebuilt church’s infrastructure following fire which destroyed most structure including old church entirely on September 20th 2001 .
