East Bethel, Minnesota, is a small town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 964 at the 2010 census, up from 896 in 2000. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and has a rich history dating back to 1881 when it was founded as an unincorporated community on a nearby farm by farmers and their families who were moving eastward from Iowa City after being driven out of that city during the American Civil War. The original East Bethel settlement was located on what is now Pembina Road just outside of town limits. In 1881, settlers in this new community decided to name it for Easton, Pennsylvania (then a part of Canada) since they had recently moved there from Iowa City and were familiar with that city's history and culture. The town continued to be called Easton until 1903 when it changed its name to Bethel because that was the name given to another community nearby, WestBethel, which also had a strong history as an unincorporated community. In 1907, East Bethel became one of five towns in Minnesota included within the newly created Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area – an area which encompasses all or parts of six counties in central Minnesota: Ramsey, Hennepin, Washington County (including Minneapolis), Montgomery County (including Bloomington), Saint Louis County ( including Duluth), and Steele County (including Lakeville). At that time, East Bethel had a population estimated at 1,100 people but by 1930 its size had grown to 693 people after annexing farmland around Centerpointe Shopping Center adjacent to its village center. During World War II many residents served in the military; some even built homes on army base land within town limits where they resided while their units fought overseas. Following World War II most residents left for other parts of Minnesota or elsewhere within the United States; however some remained until 1970 when most remaining buildings were destroyed by fire caused by unknown arsonists during winter weather conditions which affected much of easternMinnesota particularly around Red Wing and Stroudsburg areas]. As many as 100 individuals may have been involved in this act although no arrests have ever been made.[1] Some reconstruction took place starting in 1970 but progress has been slow due primarily to lack funding[2]. Restoration efforts began again following local donations beginning in 2006 with support from several interested parties led by Mayor Dave Meyers[3]. In December 2009 local officials announced plans for construction over 15 miles long along Highway 412 betweenBethel Junction and Holyoke Avenue will begin serving as an intermodal transportation corridor connecting these two villages with potential links northbound through downtown Minneapolis and eastbound through downtown Saint Paul; this project is expected to bring significant economic development both communities will enjoy[4].
