East Bethel is a small town in Isanti County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Isanti County. East Bethel is located on the Missouri River, east of Minneapolis. The first people to live in what is now East Bethel were the Mennonites who arrived from Germany in 1854. They built their own log cabin and raised chickens and pigs. In 1857, they founded a Methodist church which still operates today as East Bethel United Methodist Church. The area around present-day EastBethel was long inhabited by various cultures including Dakota Sioux and Ojibwe Indians before European settlers arrived in droves during the 1840s and 1850s looking for land to settle. There were over 150 families living here by 1860 when two brothers named Isaac Becker and Herman Becker donated land to become the Township of East Bethel. In 1876, five men - John Wolkowitz (1836-1912), George Hirsch (1846-1909), Arent Nye (1851-1927), Augustus Herrmann (1853-1938) and Julius Streicher - organized what would eventually be called the "First Settlement Company" which bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of forested land between Cedar Creek and Red Cedar Creek near present day downtown East Bethelialleierville for $2 per acre ($50 million adjusted value). This purchase made possible much of what we know about agriculture inMinnesota during this time: rice growing along Cedar Creek; wheat farming on Red Cedar Creek; hogs that lay down deep roots so they wouldn't rot; and fencing off large tracts of land so early settlers could grow crops withoutrovers coming into contact with wild animals or being eaten by them. This group also recruited other farmers to help them with their initial planting efforts: David Kapp from Zumbrota, Minnesota; August Struble from Arensburg,Wisconsin; Ferdinand Weiser from Springdale, Arkansas; George Heineman from Elkader, Iowa; Jacob Bartholomew from Griggsboro Township in Cumberland County New Jersey (). Together these farmers began cultivating maize – America's first corn crop –and potatoes while erecting temporary fences around their fields to keep out Indian visitors who had begun arriving at an alarming rate beginning in 1877.: east bethel cemetery
