East Bethel is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the east side of Ramsey County and has a United Methodist church, two schools, and a grocery store. The first settlers to the area were fishermen who arrived in 1854. They named their place East Bethel after the easternmost point of their own country. The name was changed to Bethel in 1907 after Rev. John W. Bethel became pastor of the United Methodist Church in nearby Apple Valley. East Bethel has always been an agricultural community with agriculture being its majorstay since its early days as a farming village. In 1916, George Friel opened what would become one of the largest stores inMinnesota when he bought land near what is now Main Street and Highway 52nd Avenue for $5,000 dollars (). By 1920 there were six stores within one mile of each other in what is now East Bethel (). Two years later John Aiken donated land north of Main Street to create what would become Aiken Park (). In 1924, Hennepin County acquired large tracts of land east of downtown Minneapolis from Jonaas Johansen for $10 thousand dollars (). This gave rise to Girdwood Township which extended from Maple Avenue north to Interstate 35W and west to University Avenue () In 1950, when Girdwood Township was disbanded due to population growth (), East Bethel amalgamated with neighboring Apple Valley into new EastBethelialand incorporated on February 14th 1951 (). At that time it had a population of 3288 people (). TheFirst school open in EastBethel was First Presbyterian School which served students from grades K-6 until 1963 when it closed due to low enrollment (). Next came Muskegon Heights Elementary School which opened in 1965 and operated until 2002 before being renamed Lakeshore Middle School (); then finally Hennepin High School whichopened in 1976]. All three schools are still open today and serve students grades 7-12 . Today's economy revolves around healthcare services with many businesses based here providing health care services such as optometrists/earologists/dentists etc., along with primarycare physicians; however retail sales have long been dominant as well (e.g., gasoline stations) but this may be changing as more medical professionals have moved here because of affordable housing options nearby
