Eagan is located on the eastern edge of Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and has a border with Bloomington to the south. It is one of two towns in the Minneapolis–St.Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area, the other being Plymouth Heights to the east. The first settlers arrived in 1854 when Isaac Newton Fenton and his wife crossed the Iowa River from Illinois into what is now Saint Louis County. They named their town after their home state: "Egan". A post office was established at Eagan in 1856, and remained open until 1897. In 1911, a sawmill was built near downtown by John S McDonald and it soon became an important economic center for local farmers and ranchers who produced hay, oats, wheat and other farm products. In 1916, Eagan had a population of about 100 people; by 1930 it had grown to over 200 people thanks to new housing developments such as Maple Grove Apartments (now part of Millennium Park) and Central Avenue Homes (now known as Perkins Place). In 1929, coupon book salesman Milton Nirenberg foundedPNL Electric Power Company which supplied power to local businesses through electrical wires running through downtown Eagan; this led to greater development around town including retail stores (including Peet's Coffee), restaurants (including Olive Garden), schools (including McNamara Intermediate School), churches (Episcopal/ Methodist churches), medical clinics (Nirenberg Hospital) and more importantly – electric cars – initially operated by PNL itself but later acquired by General Motors Corporation during World War II as part of the war effort economy booster program called "Operation Victory" or "OVP". At its peak production capacity before 1945 there were up to 400 PNL Electric Cars operating throughout centralMinnesota; however due primarily to wartime rationing this number fell rapidly following Pearl Harbor along with most other U.S car manufacturing Capacity within three years thereafter Following World War II there was significant growth in construction activity both inside town limits – including multi-million dollar projects like Maple Grove Apartments – as well as outlying areas such as Centennial Hills which would eventually become part of Downtown Minneapolis Today much of what once characterized rural life within Eagan today serve commuters travelling into Twin Cities via I-35W or Hennepin County Road 610 either northward or southwestward A commemorative plaque dedicated to pioneers Isaac Newton Fenton & Anna May Fenton stands outside Ofice #2 on 4th Street NW just east of Cedar Avenue
