The first European settlers in what is now Cottage Grove were French Canadians who arrived in 1819. They built a logging camp on the site of present-day Maplewood and named it after their cottage, which they had erected near the river for trading purposes. A post office was established in 1825, and by 1830 the community had a store and schoolhouse. In 1836, a group of Norwegian farmers settled in what is now Cottage Grove and named it after their home country; they also founded an Lutheran church there that same year. By 1840, however, most of the Norwegian immigrants had left for California because of bad weather conditions there and low prices for land south of the Great Lakes region. Cottage Grove, Minnesota is a small town in the northwestern corner of Minnesota. The population was 9,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Cottage Grove were farmers who moved to this area from nearby Hibbing in 1854. Henry Kapp and his family started a general store there in 1857 and it became an important stop on the Chippewa Trail. In 1870, James Wachtel came to Cottage Grove and began farming land that he had purchased from the Dakota Sioux People some years earlier. By 1890, Cottage Grove had become a village with a post office, nine churches, two stores, and three schools. During World War I (1914-18), many men from Cottage Grove served in military units such as the 151st Infantry Regiment which fought at Belleau Wood and Ile de France. After the war ended, many of these men returned to their farms and businesses while others took up new careers or moved away for various reasons. However, most of these people would come back to live in Cottage Grove over time because it was an important community for agriculture and commerceAmong these early residents were: Horace Greeley (owner of The Gopher Journal), Augustus Thomson (founder of Thomson's Bazaar), John Daugherty (builder of Daugherty Hall), Fenton Wiley (founder of Wiley Manufacturing Company). In 1924-25 County Auditor John Hennepin appointed Elisha Sanger as City Marshal for all city wards except North Side which was then under jurisdiction of Minneapolis. In 1928 Sanger bought property east of Second Street between Morrison Avenue and First Avenue from Jock Mahoney for $3,000 cash ($75 per acre). This land later became known as Sanger Park after him
