The farmers had just finished harvesting their crops and were inside their house when the Sioux killed six people, including four children. This event is considered the beginning of the Indian Massacre in Cottage Grove. In 1868, another massacre took place when white settlers traveled to a remote area in search of gold. They discovered and killed several Native Americans, including two small children. This event is also known as the Battle of Red Earth Creek. In 1889, rifle stocks were introduced to this community by members of the United States gun club. Cottage Grove is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, Cottage Grove had a total ZIP code of 55403. The City of Cottage Grove was organized on December 15, 1871 from parts of Falcon Heights and Hibbing. The name "Cottage Grove" was chosen because many farmers in that area were living in cottages or dwellings made out of logs and boards. The first mill on the site opened in 1874 and produced flour for local markets as well as export to Sweden and other countries. In 1895, A&P grocery store opened in what is now downtown Cottage Grove and soon became one of the largest grocery stores in town. At about this time some citizens decided to build their own homes rather than rely on government assistance to do so; this led to the growth of downtown during the early 20th century as more people chose to live closer to their work instead of traveling away for shopping purposes or taking longer trips home on vacations (the same reasons why Interstate 94 bypassed Cottage Grove when it was built). In 1925, Pioneer Hall (later renamed Metrodome)liwas constructed east of downtown near Centerpoint Mall which served as home field for both Minneapolis Vikings football games and concerts by various symphonies until it collapsed following a fire in 1991. This event helped spur development southward along I-94 which eventually reached its current location just north of where Pioneer Hall once stood - giving CottageGrove an impressive skyline view all seasons long! On January 1st 1959 Mayor John Howey declared Hennepin County an open-air shopping mall with expressways nearby allowing easy access from surrounding communities for shoppers seeking bargains not only within Hennepin County but also adjacent counties! This ushered in yet another era for downtown CottageGrove with new businesses opening up daily making it one Of The Most Active And Exciting Regions In Town!!! Today Downtown still features alot Of New Businesses And Retailers You Can't Find ANYWHERE Else In Town!!!
