Cottage Grove, Minnesota is home to the world's first optical accessory store, "The Gilt Shop." Opened in 1892 by Mr. and Mrs. George Gilt, The Gilt Shop was one of the first businesses in the area to sell optical accessories. In 1925, The Gilt Shop moved to its current location on Fourth Street in Cottage Grove. It has been a family-owned business ever since. In 1932, The Gilt Shop started selling camcorders and other video equipment. By 1951, The GiltShop had become one of the leading retailers for both camcorders and videotape equipment in the United States. In 1962, The GiltShop became a subsidiary of Sylvania Electronics Corporation (Sylvania). In that year, Sylvania merged with Philips Lighting Company (Philips) to form Philips Sylvania Corporation (PSC). At PSC, Mr. George Gilt continued to be executive chairman until his death in 1984. At PSC, Mr. GeorgeGilt began creating new products for optics and technology such as digital video cameras and headlamps. In 1990s he also developed the now well-known polarized sunglasses line called "George's polarized lenses." These sunglasses are still popular today and make great gifts! In 1998-1999 PSC opened its second store outside of Detroit Michigan called "Oasis Optical" which specialized in corrective lens replacement services for people who have contact lenses replaced due to cataracts or other causes of blindness MrGilts died suddenly at Oasis Optical before it could open; however his son Ben succeeded him as CEO/Chairman until his death on October 7th 2006 aged 84 years old . After Ben's death his 2nd son John took over as CEO/Chairman until he too died suddenly on November 10th 2006 aged 82 years old . After John's death another son Timothy took over as CEO/Chairman until he too died suddenly on December 4th 2006 aged 66 years old . Timothy was succeeded by their daughter Lisa who is currently the Executive Director Since 2003 Lisa has been working at PSC full time as our Manager of Customer Experience Today there are three generations running our company:BenGilts oldest son John(2006-present),JohnGs younger brother Timothy(2002-2006),LisaGGolden granddaughter Rachelle(2003-2006)

By 1910, however, manufacturing had replaced agriculture as Cottage Grove's mainstay and its economy struggled during World War II; nevertheless, it bounced back quickly following the war and reached its current level of economic development by 1990. In 2000, Cottage Grove became one of six cities in Twin Cities metropolitan area to establish itself as an official seat of government when Minneapolis merged with Saint Paul to form Minnesota statewidestatehood ceremonies; since then, it has continued to grow rapidly due to its role as a key community jurisdiction for both Minneapolis and SaintPaul
