Cottage Grove is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 41,594 at the 2010 census. Cottage Grove is the third-largest city in Minnesota after Minneapolis and St. Paul. The city was founded in 1858 by Methodist missionaries from Illinois as a haven for refugees from religious persecution in Hungary. The first permanent residents of Cottage Grove were Methodists who had fled to the area from Hungary before the American Civil War. By 1870, there were around 400 people living in what is now Cottage Grove. In 1887, General John A. Logan founded the University of Minnesota here and began teaching classes for students from across the Midwest and beyond. In 1915, Cottage Grove became an incorporated town with its own mayor and councilors; it remains that way today. During World War II, much of what is now downtown was destroyed by fire but portions such as the library and community hall remain today as part of Cottage Grove's history-rich skyline viewline. post-war growth has again brought forth new development on several blocks near downtown including Live Oak Mall (now Macy's), Applebees restaurant/cafeteria complex on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets NW, City Hall (now used as a movie theater), Pioneer Place apartments (now known as Loews Regency) on First Avenue NE corner Tenth Street NW - home to one of the largest gift shops in North America - Bricktown Brewery & Distillery on Second Avenue NE corner Eighth Street NW - once home to one of Canada's largest breweries - and numerous other restaurants and businesses including two full service hospitals which have since closed down due to lack of patients or competition from more modern facilities nearby

The city was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1854 and quickly grew into one of the largest settlements in the area. After experiencing a Boomtown Rush during the early 1870s, Cottage Grove adopted a policy of restraint and moderation in order to prevent its growth from becoming too rapid. Cottage Grove was founded in 1854 by Deacon George Fromhold and his wife, Esther. The town rapidly grew and soon had a post office, school, Masonic Lodge, and residential area. In 1871 the community incorporated as a city. By 1907 the population of Cottage Grove had grown to over 10,000 people. In 1916 Cottage Grove became one of the first cities in Minnesota to adopt a soda fountain system for distributing water to residents' homes. In 1942 Cottage Grove was hit by a massive tornado that destroyed most of the town.
