Cottage Grove is a small town in the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, located in Ramsey County. The population was 624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settlers in Cottage Grove were farmers who arrived in 1851 and 1852. They built log cabins on a hill overlooking the present day town square. The first post office was established in 1858, and the first store was opened in 1865. Pioneer John Sauer designed and built Cottage Grove's first schoolhouse which he used as his farm home until his death in 1893. The Town of Cottage Grove was organized on November 3, 1912, from parts of the Township of Maplewood, also within Ramsey County. The original plat for Cottage Grove was prepared by Jens Jensen and filed with the county board on October 22, 1913. A special election to approve the plat had been held on November 3 but no vote took place because there were only six ballots cast for villagehood status rather than 10 as required by law; however, villagehood status was granted to Cottage Grove anyway due to Community Chest support for this project at that time In 1916 residents voted to name their community after General George Washington "Washington" (1785-1832) when he donated land north of town to help create a new township west of Minneapolis called Washington Heights which would be annexed into Maplewood later that year Old Settlers Museum - In honor of all those who have made an impact on our community over time including pioneer John Sauer & Elsie Heisey who donated land adjacent to our Square today – open every Saturday 9am-4pm since May 2016

The university played an important role during both World Wars I and II; as a result, many businesses were established within close proximity to UNM research facilities. During the 1960s through 1990s, advances were made within computer technology which led to dramatic changes within agricultural practices throughout North America; this led to overall economic growth for many small towns across North Dakota like Cottage Grove which benefited greatly from this changeover. Today, cottage groves continue play an important role within rural communities across North Dakota by providing access to quality education while also support their local economy through various activities such as agriculture or manufacturing
