Cottage Grove is a town in Clearwater County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,489 at the 2010 census. The name "Cottage Grove" is derived from Dutch settlers' term for a farmstead on the banks of the Coho River. The first permanent settler in what is now Cottage Grove was John Pohlman, who arrived in 1854. Alfred Olson and his family settled there in 1871. In 1907, John Atherton donated land to form the current city of Clearwater. The town began as a farming community with several hundred acres (120 hectares) of land. By 1910, agricultural production had increased to support 3,000 residents and 50 businesses. Manufacturing became an important factor after World War I when munitions companies located in nearby Minneapolis opened plants here for metal stamping and fabricating products such as tanks and airplane parts. After the war ended, industry declined but new businesses grew up around it such as health food stores and grocers that remain today among Clearwater's most prominent businesses.
