Gun targets and shooting have been a part of Cottage Grove, Minnesota's history for many years. The first target was placed on the banks of the Mississippi River in 1859. It was an iron stand with a 20-foot square canvas top. Visitors could shoot at it from various locations around town. The first shooting galleries were opened in Cottage Grove in 1895. They were located on Third Street and Hennepin Avenue. The galleries attracted people from all over the city to watch shooters compete against each other. In 1903, the city moved its gun range to Sixth Street and Nicollet Avenue in order to improve public safety. In 1911, Cottage Grove became the first City of Minneapolis to adopt ordinances regulating firearms and ammunition sales and use by civilians. These rules were designed to reduce gun violence within the community. Gun Targets survived World War II but were destroyed by fire in 1945. In 1957, Gun Targets reopened under new management with help from the National Rifle Association (NRA). Over time, NRA donations allowed Gun Targets to keep up with changing technology while also providing opportunities for local children to learn how to shoot at targets using NRA equipment.

In 1871 local entrepreneur Alexander McNaught donated land along First Avenue between Lyndale Boulevard and Interstate 95 for development into an industrial center called McNaughttown which became one of America's largest lead arsenals during World War I due toatery production from mines he developed there (the site currently houses Gartner Inc.). In 1914 when oil was discovered near Hibbing by David Haagensen (),enterprise owners quickly increased production at Hibbing's Don Mills refinery using a new pipeline from Three Forks overland route before that route was destroyed by sabotage within weeks (). Although initially unprofitable because high input costs made oilsprings difficult to operate without additional refining capacity (), Haagensen managed to turn Don Mills into one of America's leading petroleum companies through investments such as this plus aggressive marketing campaigns ($1 million spent nationally) (). By 1920s output levels were so great that company merged with Standard Oil Company () becoming American Petroleum Corporation (); however due largely to natural gas prices deflation set in during Great Depression led American Petroleum Corporation (APD) into receivership & eventual liquidation () As industries changed & transportation improved throughout most parts of America during late 1800s (& early 1900s), people began moving westward out of growing cities looking for greener pastures& better paying jobs opportunities than they found back East. Cottage Grove is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1857 by John and Nancy Couch. The original name of the town was White Bear Township, but it was changed to its current name in 1892 when the post office moved from Minneapolis to Cottage Grove. The village of Cottage Grove was organized on November 3, 1907. On May 15, 1912, a fire destroyed most of the village and killed twenty-one people. The community rebuilt quickly and by 1915 had a population of over 100 residents. In 1916 a new water tower was built and the village became self-sufficient with its own water supply and sewage system. In 1928 Cottage Grove donated land for the construction of Rice Lake Park which now includes several lakes and a skating rink. Over time many different businesses have been located in or around Cottage Grove including restaurants, convenience stores, banks, health clinics, factories and more. On July 6th 2019 grade school students from nearby Marshalltown were taken hostage by gunmen who barricaded themselves inside their school after reportedly threatening students with guns if they did not hand over any money to them
