Cottage Grove is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The community was laid out in 1858 by Reuben and Anna Crouse, who named it after their farmstead at Cowichan Point on land they purchased from the United States government. It became a town in 1902, and residents voted to switch to a Republican Party affiliation in 1920. Cottage Grove has had a mayor and municipal council since 1945. The population was 4,951 as of 2019.[1] The first settlers in this area were French Canadians who arrived at what is now Cottage Grove from Quebec City during the early 1800s. They built log cabins near present-day downtown from 1858-1860, before moving eastward and settling at what is now North High School Road. By 1875, many more French Canadians had arrived, and began to build sawmills that would produce lumber for local homes and businesses. By 1888, there were 10 sawmills operating within 2 miles (3 km) of where today's downtown stands;[2] these mills helped create an economy which supported both people and property growth throughout much of the 20th century. During World War II (1939-1945), General Electric's auricular plant – one of several wartime facilities located nearby – produced military radios vital to allied forces fighting in Europe. In 1945, following World War II's end,GE transferred its operations to Research Park Township outside Chicago;[3][4] Cottage Grove followed suit two years later when its own auricular plant became operational once again.[5][6] However, GE's auraular production facility closed down completely by 1981 due to competitive pressures from other companies such as Motorola Inc.;[7][8] thus ending an era for GEnx manufacturing here at home]. subsequent annexations have added 1 square mile (2 km²) each over time: Allegany Heights annexed in 1951,[9][10]; Eden Prairie annexed in 1957,[11]; Maplewood annexed separately in 1966,[12]; White Bear Lake annexed separately also in 1966[13], until all but one township along the river had been annexed by 1990; finally Stroudsburg annexation took place on April 1st 2006 with no public consultation or vote taken.[14][15][16]
Cottage Grove is a city in and the county seat of Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 25,873 at the 2010 census. It has been the fourth-largest city in Ramsey County since its incorporation in 1858. The area that is now Cottage Grove was first settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1858. A post office called Hetteland was established in 1859, and remained in operation until 1901. In 1868, a group of German farmers founded a town called Germantown to be near their families living on the east side of the Mississippi River. But when the railroad came through town, they all deserted Germantown and moved to Cottage Grove. Cottage Grove was formally incorporated as a city on December 15, 1902. At that time it had a population of 605 people only; it grew rapidly during World War I due to munitions production at nearby Stroudsburg Arsenal. After World War I ended, businesses started to leave for new locations such as Minneapolis and St Louis because of low prices for goods produced hereabouts. In 1933, Cottage Grove became one of six Twin Cities cities through annexation by Minneapolis proper; however annexations were stopped after financial problems arose with this move which eventually led to its current form today as an independent city with its own government and economy
