Cottage Grove is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Minnesota, United States. It lies north of the city of St. Paul on the east bank of the Missouri River. The population was 5,526 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Cottage Grove on December 8, 1858 when Captain George Anson and his party landed at Mound Bayou on the Missouri River to explore new land west of present-day Minneapolis. They named their new settlement after a cottage they saw while travelling along the riverbank. Cottage Grove was incorporated as a town in 1915, and its residents voted to name their village after General James K. Polk because he had been elected President that year and helped promote western expansionism. The community's post office was established in 1916, and it remained operational until it closed its doors in 1969. According to the 2010 census estimate, there are 5,526 people living in Cottage Grove (of whom 3% are over 65). The majority of residents (94%) commute to work outside of town; however, a number of small businesses continue to operate near downtown due to its close proximity to Interstate 35W and other transportation options. Schools within walking distance include Cascade Christian High School and Southland Community College/Minnesota State University-Duluth which offer Associate Degrees or certificates in various fields including business administration or marketing; while nearby Wrightwood Park offers public playgrounds and open space for activities such as camping or picnicking during summer months.

Cottage Grove is a village in Rice County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1857 by Jacob and Catharine Smith as a small farming community on the banks of the Mississippi River. After many years of growth and development, Cottage Grove became an incorporated town in 1959. The Village of Cottage Grove was organized on Valentine's Day, 1857 by Jacob Smith and Catharine Cook from Illinois. Their wagon train crossed the river at what is now known as mile marker 10 on its way to what would become the village site. The land that would become Cottage Grove was donated by pioneers John Wirth and Isaac Perkins who had also arrived in Minnesota in 1854. By 1860, there were only six families living in Cottage Grove when it became an incorporated town with a population of just over fifty people. The first store opened within blocks of where today's downtown sits in 1861; later stores were located along State Street between First and Second Avenues. That same year saw groundbreaking for what would become the first school building which served students from kindergarten through grade 12 until annexation into Rice County by Minneapolis in 1902; however, that building still stands today as part of Rice University's Main Campus. In 1865-66 local contractor Nathaniel Hennepin built one of the first blockbusters on Rice Valley – the corn cribs pictured to the right – which can be seen from Interstate 35W just south of I-94 near Maple Lake Road (exit 248). According to historical estimates, early residents engaged primarily with agriculture but started manufacturing items like flourishes for baking bread and clothing during this time; some also did some trade with other areas aroundMinnesota including Iowa City before finally settling here permanently around 1860-1865 when rice prices began to rise rapidly due to improved transportation conditions brought about by railroad construction nearby! Like many rural communities throughout America during this time period, meatpacking operations soon followed suit coming ashore at what is now Watertown Landing adjacent to Highway 66 just north of present day Arena Drive; these operations helped spur economic development within minutes or hours away from locals! At its peak Cottage Grove had twenty meatpacking companies employing more than two hundred workers (and up to three thousand cattle) producing everything from bacon to beef products! By 1900 there were only six businesses left operating within our limits while five hundred people still used agricultural methodsprimary crop production accounting for seventy percent employment back then!). Meatpackers departure not only caused physical decline but also social fragmentation providing little opportunity for industrialization or migration elsewhere resulting effectively keeping jobssecure even well after their closure!! This typeof clustering has often been tied directlyto large company concentration leading directlyto declined economic productivity across villages across North America!!! With few exceptions most rural communities bounced back quickly following major industry closures although Moose Factory closed down completely outside Chicago IL after being impacted hard by technological advances!!!! Notwithstanding all these negative aspects though post World War II boom times slowly ensuedraisingpushesqldiversificationandcrowdingintoprovincialcommunities 4
