It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is the county seat of Ramsey County. Cottage Grove was founded in 1871 by Captain John Hennepin as a trading post on the Mower River. In 1876, Cottage Grove became a city and was renamed after its main square, City Square. The city declined in importance until it merged with neighboring Morrison to form Ramsey County in 1903. In 1958, the city name was changed back to Cottage Grove after voters approved an amended charter that reverted to its original name while adding another word –Grove –to reflect increased growth over time. The community has experienced rapid growth since 2000 when it annexed nearby Bloomington along with other municipalities within Ramsey County due to annexing policy changes made by then-Governor Tim Pawlenty (R). Growth continues today with new development continuing along University Avenue and State Street near downtown where many businesses have been built since annexation including Applebee's Restaurants, IHOP restaurants, Best Buy stores, Dakota Dunes Casino Resort Resort and more. Many popular tourist attractions located near downtown include Boulevard of Stars attraction featuring art galleries ± murals ± live music ± theatrical production ± restaurant + beverage combo tours ± gift shops ± ice cream parlors +++ nightlife establishments ++

Cottage Grove, Minnesota is a small town located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Cottage Grove were farmers who arrived around 1857. Cottage Grove became a city in 1961 when it merged with Minneapolis. In 1982, the city of Minneapolis annexed the eastern part of Cottage Grove. Today, parts of Cottage Grove are still considered part of Minneapolis because they share borders with that city. The history of Cottage Grove started out as a farming community. early pioneers were farmers who came to the area around 1857 and began to grow crops. By 1861, the community had a school and two churches. In 1922, the city of Minneapolis annexed all of Hennepin County and Cottage Grove became an inner-city suburb within that city limits. However, much of what is now downtown Cottage Grove was originally part of the original town boundaries. Today, there are several businesses in downtown which date back to before 1922 including: Mrs & Mr Cleaners (1922), Applebee's (1981), Piggly Wiggly (1927), Hansen's Barbecue Restaurant (1982), and J&J Steakhouse (2009). Additionally many residents continue to live near their homes throughout their day as there are fewowntown places that offer services such as grocery shopping or recreation opportunities beyond walking or biking distance from most homes. One popular cultural activity in downtown during wintertime is playing ice hockey on Fifth Avenue between University Avenue and Washington Avenue due to the rink located underneath Fourth Street Bridge across I-35W which opened in 2006 by teaming up with North Stars Ice Rink in Bloomington MN
Cottage Grove, Minnesota is a town in Roxbury Township, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from the Dutch word "kamer" meaning "cottage." The first settler in Cottage Grove was John Vanderhagen. The second settler was Cornelius Hesselink. There were several other families that started out in Cottage Grove before it became a village. In 1854, Samuel Fenton established a tannery in what is now Cottage Grove and named it after himself. It soon became one of the leading tanneries in the area. In 1875, Charles Goodyear established a flour mill on the edge of present-day Cottage Grove and called it Goodyear Township after himself. In 1898, Lovell Sorenson purchased land between High and Maple Streets and built his first house there. He would continue to own land in Cottage Grove until his death in 1932. The following year saw another important development when Minneapolis-St Paul Railway Company agreed to build an Line through Roxbury Township connecting Minneapolis with St Paul via Roxbury township (the current line). This made possible for many people to start living close to their jobs which helped drive agricultural production up and helped support local businesses during this time period
