Cottage Grove is a small town in Minnesota, United States. The population was 7,503 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is located in southern Minnesota on the Saint Louis River. The first people to live in what is now Cottage Grove were white traders from Sweden who came to the area during the 18th century. They named their village Saima after a place in Sweden where they had been trading for years. In 1854, a group of Norwegian immigrants also settled here and called their village Norskøya because it was located near Norway's border with Sweden. During World War II, many German soldiers were captured and held here as prisoners of war or slave laborers until they were liberated by American forces in 1945. After liberation, most of these troops returned home but some stayed behind and founded businesses such as Hormel Foods Incorporated (now part of Tyson Foods), First National Bank (now Wells Fargo), and others. In 1951, Cottage Grove voters approved annexation by Ramsey County which made it an official community within the county boundaries. The first residents started moving into their new homes in 1951 and since then Cottage Grove has seen steady growth both from its original population of about 350 to 7,503 today!

Cottage Grove was founded in 1836 by Jonathan C. Smith and his wife, Hannah. The town grew rapidly due to the presence of the railroad, which made it possible for farmers to sell their products far away from home. In 1915, Cottage Grove became a city. Over the years, the population has fluctuated but has always been relatively small. Today, there are only a few hundred residents living in the town of about 13,000 people. The history of Cottage Grove began with one man: Jonathan C. Smith Sr. Born in 1821 in Cumberland County, Kentucky, Smith moved to Minnesota in 1836 and erected a log cabin on an area now known as Park Avenue. He named his new settlement after himself and his wife Hannah (née Rankin). The first settler in Cottage Grove was John Hargrave; he arrived in 1840 and built a cabin on Wright Street. Smith's successors continued to develop the town until it attained its present size around 1915 when it became part of Minneapolis-St Paul metropolitan area
Cottage Grove was founded in 1849 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother Edwin. The name "Cottage Grove" is derived from a small, unenclosed piece of land located on the east side of the river that lay between what is now Maple Plain to the south and present day Harrison Township to the north. The first settler in what would become Cottage Grove was George Washington Bowers, who arrived in 1848. Over time more farmers arrived, many of whom were Methodist missionaries who came to preach Christianity to Native American residents living near the site of today's Village of Cottage Grove. In 1872, Reverend Wm. Harkins replaced Reverend Bowers as pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove and began work on building a schoolhouse there. That same year, he also organized a group of men to purchase 2 acres (0.80 hectares) around what is now the Village green for use as a public square or square mile (1 km²). This square parcel remains within the boundaries of today's Village although it has been renamed Park Heights since 1990. In 1875 another group purchased 3 additional acres (1 hectare) northeast of where Park Heights sits today for use as a parkland area which would later become known as Glencoe Park. In 1896 two other groups bought 5 additional acres (2 hectares) northwest of Glencoe Park for use as an open-air market called "The Square". Today these parcels make up much of what is left today Ofallon Road which runs through center village and connects it directly with Glencoe Park and The Square off its southern edge
