Cottage Grove is a small town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Hennepin County and between Minneapolis and St. Paul on Interstate 94. The first settlers in what would become Cottage Grove were farmers who arrived from Iowa in 1854. By 1870, most of the original settlers had moved away, but some left behind their farms to form a village that would be named after them - Cottage Grove Village (now part of Minneapolis). In 1876, the name was changed to Cottage Grove Township for convenience since it was then almost an entire township within one county. In 1905, Lillie Muhlenberg donated land to build a schoolhouse and conventicle which would serve as a center for women's education in the area. The conventicle became known as Sisters' Heights School until it closed in 1987 following scandalous allegations of sexual abuse by its nuns. The current community was founded when developers bought land aroundpresent-day Little Canada Creek Parkway and developed it into an apartment complex in the early 1990s. A new elementary school opened there in 2002 using funds from developer Jamie Dimon's donation to Hennepin County's only high school scholarship program for low-income students. In 2006, developer John Doerr offered $100 million for development along I-94 near his family's old dairy farm; however no deal ever came off due to disagreements over how much property he wanted given back to Cottage Grove Village and other parcels he owned elsewhere in Hennepin County . However plans are ongoing for a mixed-use development with retail space on one side and apartments or condos on the other with access through private lanes adjacent to Interstate 94 .
