Prague Karel Fiala who came from Bohemia – now part of Slovakia –and his son Julius Fiala who settled there after immigrating from Hungary.* In 1915*, World War I interrupted this process: many residents enlisted for military service within days of mobilization.* As World War I unfolded, many people living near Minneapolis left for fear that they too would be drafted or sent into battle.* Consequently, few new residents were born or grew up in Cottage Grove during those years††*. However*, due to its location at one of “the crossroads” points along Interstate 94*††* †‡*, Cottage Grove became known throughout much of Minnesota for its wide variety of cultural attractions*** * *. Cottage Grove was established in 1852 as a small Indian settlement on the banks of the Mississippi River. By 1870, it had become a small town with a population of about 140 people. In 1902, Cottage Grove was renamed after Representative George W. Cottage (D-MN). The community consolidated with neighboring Minneapolis in 1908 and its name changed again to Minneapolis-St. Paul in 1912.
