Today, Coon Rapids has become an active cultural center with many events throughout the year including music festivals, theater productions, art exhibitions and lectures by notable figures in their field or from around the Midwest. During World War II, Coon Rapids played an important role as one of three shipyards used to build military vessels for both American and British fleets; production stopped after V-E Day but resumed shortly thereafter under new management by Hapgood Shipbuilding Company (a subsidiary of John Fords company).Today, Coon Rapids continues to play an important role in downtown business with its variety of shops and services which include professional architects, plumbers/ Pipefitters etc.; however some businesses have left due to competition from larger cities nearby such as Minneapolis or StPaul

Coon Rapids, Minnesota is a small town in the county of Morrison, on the border of Iowa and Manitoba. The population was 2,906 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Sioux City–Waterloo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known inhabitants of Coon Rapids were two groups of Dakota Sioux who traveled from their winter encampment near present-day North Dakota to cross the Missouri River into Illinois in 1834. They named their new location "Coon Rapids" after a creek that flowed through their territory. In 1857, a group of settlers from Illinois founded the town of Cedar Rapids on both sides of the river where it joins the Mississippi River. Cedar Rapids grew rapidly until construction began on completion of the Iowa State Capitol in 1911 and its replacement by a new Federal courthouse in 1925 created too much competition for local merchants and entrepreneurs and it declined thereafter. During World War II, Coon Rapids served as an assembly point for military personnel departing for service in Nazi Germany. The post office was closed during this time but there are still remnants including some military equipment remaining at several locations around town todaySHARP
