Coon Rapids, Minnesota is a town in Cook County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,491 at the 2010 census. Coon Rapids is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The town was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1881 and named for John Cordon (1834-1906), a fur trader who had come to America in 1848. A post office called Cordonville was established in 1881, and the name changed to Coon Rapids in 1907. The first store opened in 1907 and the present company store building was built in 1959. Coon Rapids became a city on December 1, 1972 when it merged with neighboring nearby Eden Prairie to form the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The population of Coon Rapids increased from 4,724 at the 2000 census to 8,468 at the 2010 census; however this increase may be due largely to annexation of adjacent townships since 2000. According to USGS data, there are six streams that run through or near Coon Rapids: Cedar River (north), Elk Creek (south), Ironwood Creek (east/west), Lakeridge Creek (northwest), Moon Lake (northeast) and White Earth River (southwest). Coon Rapids is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The name of Coon Rapids comes from English settlers who named it after their creeks (coons) and rapids (ramps). The town was platted in 1857 by John Ladd, a General Land Office agent. It became a city on July 1, 1907. Coon Rapids incorporated as a township on December 11, 1909. On January 1, 1912 the city gained full city status and annexed the unincorporated community of Hope. The first post office was established in 1857 and closed in 1865; it reopened under new management in 1868. The present Post Office building was built 1904-1909. In 1925 the Minneapolis-St Paul Railroad built its line east through Coon Rapids to Duluth; the railroad company discontinued service to Coon Rapids in 1951. In that year the lastermanaged Grain Elevator Complex opened at its location northeast of downtown on what is now Fourth Street between First Avenue and Saint Louis Boulevard. That structure operated until1984 when it was sold to White Cloud Logging Company for $10 million cash and land valued at $38 million.. The timber industry declined during the 1970s with both production and demand slowdown due to overgrazing, environmental problems such as acid rain etc., global recession etc., but revival began with planting of regenerative trees around Twin Cities area by 2006 which has led to increased job opportunities for residents & businesses
Coon Rapids was founded in 1854 as a small trading post on the Minnesota River. It grew into a major town by the turn of the century, becoming known for its lumber and agricultural products. In the 1920s, Coon Rapids became home to one of the largest Jewish communities in America. The community was destroyed during World War II, but resumed growth in the postwar period. Today, Coon Rapids is a culturally rich and vibrant community with a diverse population.
