Coon Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area and is located on the Mississippi River on the border with Iowa. The first European to visit Coon Rapids was James Cook in 1778, and he named it after an Indian word meaning "black water." The town site was platted in 1851 by John Fetterman and others under the name of Riverside Township, but it became Coon Rapids when a new township was organized there in 1859. In 1907, construction began on what would become one of Twin Cities' most important landmarks: Stinson Field, home of Minneapolis' now-defunct American Football League (AFL) team,the Twins. The stadium served as both home field for Cooper Union College (founded 1886) and as a launching ground for many future major league stars including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. In 1967, Stinson Field underwent renovation which added two new decks to increase its capacity to 32,000 fans; this renovation also included reverb treatmentof the fields outfield walls which had been done before only at larger stadiums like Fenway Park or Wrigley Field. Coon Rapids is a town in Beltrami County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first people to live in Coon Rapids were those who came overland from Norway in 1858. They built the first cabin on the east side of the river and named it "Coon Rapids". In 1876, General James Wirtz founded what became known as Wirtz Brothers Grain Company here. Soon after other pioneers arrived and began to cultivate land around Coon Rapids, including John Hennepin and his son Solomon Hennepin. In 1906, Coon Rapids was incorporated as a city with a population of 924 residents. The city experienced many changes during its early years; for example, it purchased an old mill from Andrew Jarrard and rebuilt it into a large department store called Jarrard's Mills Music Hall which still stands today. There were also several small businesses located throughout downtown: Dyers' Shoes (now A&P), Roederer Bros., Button & Snively's bakery/cafeteria (now KFC), etc., until 1984 when all but one of them closed due to economic recession and deflationary forces within the local grocery industry at that time. By 1958, when floods destroyed most of downtown Coon Rapids landmarks - such as Jarrard's Mills Music Hall - only two buildings remained standing: The Post Office and First National Bank which are now used as apartments or office space by locals living in nearby neighborhoods such as Hopkinsville and Plymouth Park. Today much of what once made up downtown Coon Rapids has been replaced by newer structures such as Target Store #2 & 3 along Johnson Street between Fourth Street Sqn.#1 & 2nd Avenue E., library building on Third Street Sqn.#2 adjacent to new park across street from First National Bank building (#4), high school building on Second Avenue East near intersection with State Highway 6 (which forms boundary between Morrison Heights neighborhood on north side & south side), co-working center next door to library building (#5)an apartment complex(s) across street from library building (#6)and various smaller businesses erected since 2006 along Third Street Sqn.#2 including many popular fast food restaurants like Dunkin' Donuts*, Carl's Jr.*#7*#8*#9*#10*#11*, Papa John's Pizza*, Taco Bell*, Little Caesars Pizza*. *Also included are numerous Chinese restaurants which have opened in recent years in this redeveloped section of townscape
The first authenticated mention of the Coon Rapids area is from 1854, when a white man named John McNaught wrote in his journal that he had seen “a village on the river” and that it was “ extensive.” The name "Coon Rapids" was given to the location by early Swedish settlers because of their fear that an Indian tribe called the Coon would attack them. In 1872, a post office was established at Coon Rapids and the name was changed to Hennepin County in honor of General James Hennepin. The county seat shifted from Roanoke to Minneapolis in 1886.
