Coon Rapids is a small town in the Lower Peninsula of Minnesota, United States. The population was 909 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Coon Rapids were French Canadians who called it "Lachine." They arrived in 1819 and created a fur trading post on the edge of what is now Coon Rapids Township. In 1827, they built a gristmill on the Mississippi River and began to mill rice for local consumption. In 1865, traders from Iowa City founded a trading post next to present-day Citiesville on Big Creek near where Interstate 94 crosses it today. The Post operated until 1869 when it burned down due to firewood shortage. In 1872, wagon trains carrying lumber arrived from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and continued on to Dakota Territory; this increased demand for timber led to the construction of Stone Mountain Dam (now Brainerd Lake) in that year. Steel production started nearby in 1882 with the erection of an electric power plant by Northern Electric Company Ltd., which would remain active until 1966. The first Post Office opened in 1889 under name of Prairie du Chien; however, it closed within one year because mail was not arriving from outside County seat Sioux Falls during regular business hours (6am-3pm). A new Post Office opened in May 1890 with name of Coon Rapids after General John Custer's column crossed the river there two years earlier during his famous expedition against Sitting Bull and his Sioux War Band at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument (now known as Gateway National Recreation Area). The original building still stands adjacent to Boulevard Street across from Public Library - see Google map below for photo taken circa 1990: A grain elevator/bushel store was built west of Boulevard between First Ave & Third St around 1915 but no longer exists today as property lines have changed since then! There was also an old Masonic Lodge east off 2nd Ave just south side before demolishing 1976...should anyone know more about this?

The Coon Rapids community is located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, and it was founded in 1881. The community is named for General John A. Coon, who served as a military officer during the American Civil War and afterward helped to build what is now the city of Minneapolis. In 1881, Coon Rapids had a population of just over 100 people and consisted of just six blockhouses. By 1922, however, the population had grown to over 1,500 people and the town had developed into a commercial center with businesses such as grocery stores, banks, insurance companies, pharmacies and other services. The Steelworkers Union (a unionized labor force) settled in Coon Rapids in 1917 after being displaced by World War I production shortages in Minnesota. In 1924, Coon Rapids became an incorporated municipality and its first mayor was Soren Hansen. Coon Rapids experienced increased prosperity during the Great Depression years of 1930-1939 due in part to its location within easy commuting distance of major urban areas throughout the Midwest. However, when World War II began Aluminum Company of America's (Alcoa) demand for steel soared following America's entry into World War IIilitarism on September 2nd 1939,[1] output from Alcoa's plants declined significantly in Minnesota because aluminum was not considered strategic materials like steel that were key to war production goals.[2] This led to significant unemployment among Alcoa workers[3][4][5] as well as difficulty for local business owners coping with wartime competition from larger companies across state lines.[6][7] Ultimately, Alcoa decided not to expand its operations at any Minnesota plants after the war announced plans for large new projects overseas; this caused widespread joblessness within Minnesotan aluminum industries until those plant closures several decades later[8]. Despite these challenges,[9]Coon Rapids persisted through tough times until reaching its peak during postwar decade when more than two thousand residents lived there according to 2010 census figures.[10][11] Since then though sporadic growth has been common due primarily to natural disasters such as floods or wildfires which have struck the community multiple times since then including twice recently – both times causing extensive damage which has impacted real estate values somewhat[12]. Despite some recent progress,[13][14], overall economic conditions remain challenging given present day trends nationally where employment opportunities are increasingly available but wages still lagging behind costs[15], particularly among low-income populations especially Notably among women who have faced greater violence rates inside their homes than men outside thereof despite male perpetrators having generally been apprehended or jailed more often outside homes[]16].
The area now known as Coon Rapids was first settled by Minnesota natives in the early 1800s. The community, which today lies within the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, grew quickly after it was established on a bend in the Mississippi River. In 1851, Coon Rapids became an unincorporated community and irrigation district under the jurisdiction of Hennepin County. It remained that way until it was annexed by Minneapolis in 1904. Coon Rapids experienced some significant growth during World War II when thousands of soldiers from both sides came to live and work here. The town also saw a surge in population following the passage of the National Defense Act of 1946. In 1949, Coon Rapids merged with neighboring Maplewood to form a new city called United Parcel Service Parkland Incorporation (UPS). This merger allowed for more rapid development within UPS, which helped contribute to its current size and importance. Today, Coon Rapids is an important economic center located just east of downtown Minneapolis on Interstate 94 between Uptown and Midtown neighborhoods. Its location makes it easily accessible via public transportation or highways such as I-94/US 70/MN 25; its close proximity to major shopping districts and universities makes it well suited for business purposes; and its wide variety of retail outlets offers businesses opportunities for expansion and marketing campaigns
