Coon Rapids, Minnesota is home to numerous firearm museums and historical displays. The city's namesake was a Sioux chief named Coon Rapids who ranched in the area in the 1840s. Today, Coon Rapids is known for its many statewide shooting tournaments and festivals as well as its annual "Coon Rapids Festival." The first firearms exhibition in Coon Rapids occurred in 1892. It was organized by Elisha Swayne, an American Fur trader and member of the Minneapolis Woodbury Common Council. At that time, there were only a fewgun stores in the town. Over time, other organizations have hosted exhibitions or events related to firearms. In 1929, the National Rifle Association (NRA) held an exhibition at the local Masonic Lodge. From 1945-1959, the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) sponsored a series of Gunshows/Exhibitions called "Minnesota Heritage." Each show featured artifacts from different parts of the state. Today, there are several gun museums within easy reach of Coon Rapids residents. The most popular is probably NRA's Museum of Firearms located on Park Avenue just south of Highway 6 exit off I-35W. Coon Rapids is a city in Minnesota, United States. The population was 33,859 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Minnesota and the second-largest city in Dakota County. The first firearms were brought to Coon Rapids by fur trappers in 1851. The first permanent settler was Phebe Hennepin in 1856. Rifle ammunition was introduced to Coon Rapids on October 1, 1857 by A.L. Smith from Buffalo, New York as part of a commercial venture between himself and Gopher gunsmiths George Wills and John Browning. In 1865, Rifle ammunition company owner Abram Beardsley organized a rifle range on Red Lake for use by farmers of the area around Red Lake National Lakeshore
