The history of firearms in Coon Rapids, Minnesota goes back to the 1860s. The first guns were used by Native Americans for hunting deer and other small animals. In 1876, a group of men from Coon Rapids purchased a shotgun from George Stephenson. They named their new weapon the Shotgun Sunburst. It was the first gun to be made in Coon Rapids. In 1904, a group of men from Coon Rapids bought a rifle from John Haggerty. They named their new weapon the Rifle Starburst. It was the first rifle to be made in Coon Rapids. In 1907, an armory was built in downtown Coon Rapids by Jens Hansen and His Sons. This building became known as the Armory Square building after its use as an armory for many years. In 1912, James Fenton started manufacturing firearms in Coon Rapids with his father’s help. He later changed his name to Firearms Manufacturing Company and continued making firearms until 1954 when he merged with Smith & Wesson Corporation products company into one company called Smith & Wesson Firearms Corporation Incorporated (SWFC). SWFC is still active today with over 60 years of history behind it! During World War II, weapons were produced at ammunition plants located in nearby Minneapolis and St Cloud that specialized in making bullets for artillery shells and other war munitions. These plants are now known as Ammunition Storage Center#1 and Ammunition Storage Center#2 respectively! After WWII ended, most of these facilities closed down or were converted into housing units or other uses such as Target Field located on what is now University Avenue near Interstate 94 which hosted major league baseball games throughout the 1960s and 1970s while Ammo Storage Center#1 remained idle until 1998 when it was leased by local school district who later sold it to Alcoa Aluminum Holdings Incorporated who then donated it to State College Area Community College where it remains today (see photo below). Unfortunately, Ammo Storage Center#2 has been abandoned since 2003 when Alcoa dismantled their operations there leaving only some brick remnants standing around campus currently requiring occasional cleanup efforts due to moss growth!

Polk recommended that settlers from Iowa territory move into present-dayMinnesota to help clear land for cattle ranchers and farmers. The influx of settlers created a demand for goods and services from natives, which led to tension between the two groups. In 1861, when Ulysses S. Grant became president, he ordered military forces to quash any Indian resistance against white settlement in Minnesota. This ignited a series of battles known as the Great Lakes Wars. Eventually, the native nations agreed to cede most of their lands in present-dayMinnesota to whites. Today, parts of Coon Rapids are home to several Native American tribes as well as many businesses and residences associated with European Americans who settled there during its early days. Many artifacts from this period still remain on display at local museums or libraries across central Minnesota
The Coon Rapids area was first settled by the Europeans in 1851. The town was named for two coon hogs that were found near the site. The first white settlers arrived in 1855 and founded a farm on what is now Main Street. In 1865, the town was moved to its current location and became a part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.
