When the first settlers arrived in what is now Coon Rapids, they were Wanderers. The name 'Coon Rapids' was given to the place by a local Indian. The Sioux named this area Wacoma (meaning 'water side'). The first settler in Coon Rapids was David House. He and his family built a house on the east bank of the river in 1795. In 1828, John Dickey and his family moved from Iowa to become the first settlers in what is now Coon Rapids. They started a grocery store and also raised chickens on their farm. In 1876, J.B. Brady bought land near the present day site of Walmart Supercenter from Wm. Fenton for $2,000 dollars cash! This purchase marked the beginning of Walmart's presence in Coon Rapids! Today, Walmart has over 1 million square feet located within walking distance of our original store!

Steelworkers brought new life to downtown Coon Rapids while also creating thousands of jobs in nearby villages such as Anoka and Maplewood. The decline of heavy industry in Manitoba during World War II led to increased unemployment and poverty in rural areas throughout North America; however, coon rapids escaped this fate because of its close proximity to metropolitan Minneapolis-St Paul. In recent decades, however, some negative aspects of postindustrialism have hitCoorlips hard: joblessness has returned; housing prices are skyrocketing; crime rates are increasing; and public services have been cut back or eliminated altogether due to budget constraints or lack of funding
