Columbia Heights is a neighborhood in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was once part of the city of St. Paul, and later became its own municipality. The population of Columbia Heights was estimated to be over 100,000 at its peak in the early 20th century. The neighborhood's history starts with the arrival of immigrants from Russia in 1881. They started a small grocery store on Nicollet Avenue and started trading goods with other immigrant communities in the area. By 1912, Columbia Heights had become an ethnically diverse community that included Scots-Irish, Lithuanians, Czechs, Poles and Russian Jews. In 1914, American soldiers were deployed to Europe during World War I and many residents moved into the area to help support their government brethren. During Prohibition years (1920-1933), Columbia Heights experienced some high levels of crime due to its wide variety of liquor sellers and users. However, it also saw some growth as young professionals moved into the area after gaining access to affordable housing through federal subsidies program known as GAP (General Assistance Program). This era also saw significant growth for local businesses such as The Heckscher Brewery which now produces craft beers made with rainwater from nearby rooftops. In recent decades Columbia Heights has seen steady gentrification as well as increased development around it by wealthier families seeking more comfortable streetscapes within walking distance of restaurants and shops along Nicollet Avenue corridor between Emerson Street and University Avenue NW

Columbia Heights is a small town in Minnesota, United States. It is located in the western Twin Cities metropolitan area and is part of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The population was 9,814 as of the 2010 census. Columbia Heights is home to the University of Minnesota at Bloomington, a major research university. Columbia Heights was first settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1871. The original name for the town was "Mount Pleasant". In 1907, Columbia Heights incorporated as a city and adopted its present name of Columbia Heights after President James K. Polk's address to Congress on February 14, 1907 in which he urged passage of an act providing for incorporation of certain towns within Minneapolis-St. Paul into cities under one government. The University of Minnesota at Bloomington (UMB) moved to Columbia Heights from downtown Minneapolis in 1958 and established the School of Business Administration there in 1961 followed by the School of Health Sciences in 1966. The UMB also built a new campus across from Interstate 94 near Burns Road east of Stroudsburg Avenue in 1978 which serves as today's school complex known as "The Jacklin Campus". In 2000, UMB merged with Carlson College to form Carlson University and then Carlson Colleges Inc., which became Univision America Corporation when Univision USA purchased all but two assets (the radio network Telemundo and some cable channels) of Time Warner Cable Company's Turner Broadcasting System subsidiary during that company's acquisition by AOL Time Warner Inc.. The blocks surrounding main street were once businesses that served residents such as grocery stores, laundromats, bakeries etc.; however most are now closed or have been converted into apartments or condos/townhomes. Many storefronts remain including: Woolworths store; Safeway store; IGA Grocery; Gelson’s bakery; Pillsbury Doughnuts; Ford dealership; Harry’s Barbecue restaurant etc.; though most have been replaced by newer buildings or apartments with similar names/configurations
