Columbia Heights is a small town in rural Polk County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Columbia Heights were fur traders from Russia and Siberia who passed through the area in 1824 on their way to Saint John's River Colony in Newfoundland. In 1881, J.P. Morgan bought land near Columbia Heights and built his home there known as The Gilded Cage which still stands today (it has been replaced by a housing complex). In 1902, Clarence King bought land east of Columbia Heights and began developing it into what is now known as Columbia Heights Village. He named it after his childhood home in Missouri City, Texas where he spent summers as a child before moving to Stonington, Kansas in 1903 when he became a U.S. Army captain during World War I and then served as assistant chief of staff for operations at Camp Funston in Wichita, Kansas until 1919 when he sold his interest in the village to Mr. Wohlgemuth for $1 million dollars (). In 1923, Harry Emerson Fosdick purchased some of Mr Wohlgemuth's holdings including those around Columbia Heights and began development of what would become Fosdick Park which still exists today (). Fosdick Park quickly became one of the largest undeveloped areas in Minneapolis-St Paul due to its great potential for growth; however, because it was located within city limits at that time it was not subject to zoning regulations like other developments within the city limits such as Target Center or First National Bank Building which had much more centralized electrical grids and official addresses (). Consequently, development did not take place until after World War II when neighborhood groups lobbied county officials for restrictions on apartment buildings being erected near schools (), resulting in legislation having been passed allowing only single-family homes without gardens or driveways () . The area now known as Columbia Heights was originally part of what was called "the Uppertown" district of Minneapolis. This area included much of North Minneapolis and now lies within the Central Park South neighborhood. The Uppertown district was home to many large businesses, including Prentice-Hall and National Cash Register. In 1928, when Minneapolis moved from its rural agricultural roots to become an urbanized city, Uppertown became part of the new city limits. The move into an urban environment meant that new opportunities for development were available in Columbia Heights. One such opportunity was Newmark & Co.'s acquisition of land in 1927 for what would later become Columbia Mall. Newmark & Co., which at that time consisted primarily of grocery stores and department stores, decided to open a hotel in the mall on behalf of their customers. The first hotel in Columbia Heights opened its doors on November 1, 1927; it was called The Starlite Hotel and it served as both a commercial and residential property until it closed its doors in 1978. During World War II, many residents located along Nicollet Avenue (then called Nicollet Street) took up arms against the Axis Powers under the name "Fort Snelling." Many citizens who lived near Nicollet Avenue joined various patriotic organizations throughout World War II; these organizations included American Legion Post No 4205 (now known as Hennepin County Veterans Hall), Committee for Defence Against Enemy Aliens (CDEA), Minnesota State Troopers Association Chapter No 226 (now known as Twin Cities Military Affairs Museum), Fort Snelling United Daughters Auxiliary Unit No 3204-B (now defunct). When World War II ended, most residents returned to their homes or continued living near their businesses while others relocated within Minneapolis or nearby St Paul counties for job opportunities during peacetime. Some individuals who had taken up arms during World War II continued this activity by forming patriotic groups again after hostilities stopped; these groups include: Fort Snelling United Daughters Auxiliary Unit No 3204-B (now defunct), American Legion Post No 4205 (now known as Hennepin County Veterans Hall), Committee for Defence Against Enemy Aliens (CDEA), Minnesota State Troopers Association Chapter No 226 (now known as Twin Cities Military Affairs Museum).
