In 1915, a group of Swedish refugees landed at Pier 9 on the Mississippi River and soon began to settle in Columbia Heights. This group was among the earliest Swedish-American settlers in Minneapolis and they became known as “the Swedes of Broadway” due to their location near one of the city’s most important thoroughfares. In addition to their grocery store and butcher shop, this group built several homes around Pier 9 which remain standing today. The first African American resident of Minneapolis arrived in Columbia Heights in 1948 when Vernon Cobb moved from his family’s home on Third Avenue North into an apartment building owned by Drayton Whitehead. Cobb would go on to be one of the most successful businessmen and philanthropists within Minneapolis – he donation helped make First Baptist Church one of America’s largest black churches and he served as president emeritus of local Charities Board member programs Incorporated (now Hennepin County Community Foundation). In 1969, Reva Carrillo became only the second Latina mayor of Minneapolis when she was elected as Mayor Pro Tem with support from both major political parties - Carrillo would later become City Councilwoman for District 5B (Columbia Heights) before becoming MN Governor Ed Pawlenty's running mate during his successful 2010 campaign against Margie Schauer
