The community first consisted of only a few homes and businesses. In 1924, Columbia Heights was incorporated as a city block. The area became more populated after World War II when many people who had been displaced by war moved into Columbia Heights. The population grew even more after Interstate 94 was built in 1988 through Columbia Heights; this addition helped spur further development in Columbia Heights. Today, Columbia Heights includes a wide range of businesses and residences including high-end apartments and condos as well as low-income housing developments. Many residents are also involved in local politics or have connections to local organizations.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of America’s most significant civil rights leaders. This event marked a new era for Columbia Heights as it became known as an open-air education center where students from all backgrounds could learn together under one roof. Today, Columbia Heights is a vibrant community with active businesses and thriving cultural traditions dating back centuries. It is also home to one of America’s largest African American churches – Ebenezer Baptist Church – as well as several schools that offer high-quality educational opportunities for students from all backgrounds. The Columbia Heights neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota was developed from the early 1800s until the late 1940s. The area is centered around Washington and 5th Streets, with other streets running east-west in a northeast-southwest direction. The first settlers to the area were French Canadians who arrived in 1814. By 1824, they had built a trading post on what is now First Street. In 1829, the United States government created an area called "Columbia Heights" in order to give preference to American investors over foreign investors. The land was purchased from Canadian owners for $3,000 and development began shortly thereafter. During the 1840s and 1850s, many Germans settled in Columbia Heights as well; this was due to their job opportunities as shipbuilders on Lake Superior. Many homes were built during this time period with Gothic Revival architecture styles including Federal Style and Richardsonian Romanesque Revival styles. In 1854, Congress passed the Second Organic Act which gave rise to municipal government within Minneapolis. This act allowed for Neighborhood Commissioners (a type of city council) to be elected instead of being appointed by Mayor or Councilmember. The commissioners would have authority over all aspects of local governance including public health, housing, sanitation and education within their district limits. Columbia Heights experienced rapid growth during this time period as new houses were erected and people moved into the neighborhood PCR growing steadily throughout much of the 19th century until it reached its peak during World War II when numerous families fled Nazi Germany due to persecution there
