The current population of Cloquet is about 920 people. Cloquet is located on the shores of Lake Superior, just west of Duluth. The town was originally named after Cleopus, an Athenian general who had died in battle. The name “Cloquet” means “Island on the Lake” in French and it stuck to the town until at least 1916 when it changed back to its original spelling, Cloxton. The first settlers to live in Cloquet were farmers and their families who arrived around 1857. They built log cabins on what is now Main Street and started growing crops that they sold to local farmers for goods and services such as transportation, lumber, and farm supplies. In 1916, Cloxton became part of the city of Duluth which made it easier for people to get groceries and other necessary items from outside the small town. Today, Cloquet contains a variety of businesses including two grocery stores (Bargain Basement Grocery & Fresh Market), three banks (Wells Fargo & Company, First National Bank & Trust Company, JPMorgan Chase Bank), four post offices (Cloaket Post Office #1-4; Cloaker Post Office #5; Bellefontaine Post Office #1), two churches (St John’s Episcopal Church & United Methodist church; First Presbyterian church) as well as six businesses within one mile of each other including four restaurants (Lenny’s Greek restaurant; Big Apple pizza; Joes Pizza Place; Park Avenue Grille); two bars/pubs (Thin Man's bar & grill & Pizzeria il Divino); three hair salons (Hairstyles Unlimited Hair Salon; Curly Girls Hair salon - new location since 2013); one dry cleaners service - Clochette Dry Cleaners Inc.; one toy store - The Gizmos store There are also several agriculture-related businesses operating locally such as a dairy farm (Dairy Queen Dairy Store), corn planting days(Corn Planting Day event every fall), hay making day(Hay Making Day event every spring), apple orchard(Apple orchard day celebration annually held late summer/early fall)), seed starting events(Seed Starting Day monthly event held early summer/late fall)), ice cream trucks(Ice Cream Truck Days every month at various locations throughout town) as well as many smaller businesses like beauty supply stores (.7 Sisters produce market open Saturdays from 9am-3pm,) drugstores (.7 Sisters Pharmacy open Saturday mornings from 7am-10:30am,) convenience stores (.7 Sisters gas station open Saturday mornings from 7am-9pm,)BTN office buildings (.75 MIKE building closed permanently Sept 2016) with over 1,000 employees employed there full time!
