As Cloquet, Minnesota is known for its softball and fishing traditions, the town also had a history of manufacturing firearms. In 1868, A.B. Smith & Son began making revolvers in Cloquet. The company continued to produce firearms until it closed in 1907.
Cloquet is a small town in the Lower Peninsula of Minnesota, located on the former Ottawa County line. The population was 1,382 at the 2000 census. Prior to its incorporation as a municipality in 1892, Cloquet was part of the unincorporated community of White Sands. Cloquet began as a farmstead on what is now Lansing Avenue and Mud Lake Road. The first settler in Cloquet was George Hennepin, who purchased land from the government for $1 per acre in 1852. He named his farm "Hennepin Heights". In 1854, John Muhlenberg homesteaded nearby and named his property "Muhlenberg Heights". In 1875, James Ahern settled east of Cloquet on what is now Rt 522 south of Cloquet. He called his land "Ahern Heights". By 1880, all land within present-day Cloquet had been surveyed and sold by Ahern or others and it became an organized village with a post office under its own name on November 3, 1881. On January 12th that year, the first municipal election took place and George Hennepin (the founder's son) served as Mayor; Abram Snively served as Deputy Mayor. The Village Board reorganized in 1890 when it became an incorporated municipality with its own clerk/treasurer/council; however, service continued to be provided by Deputy Mayor Abram Snively until 1893 when he resigned to take up a position at Minneapolis University School of Law where he would remain until 1898 when he died suddenly at the age of 63 years old. On October 17th 1895 there was another municipal election held and Edward Laughlin (a local farmer) won mayoralty with 60% majorities over two other candidates; however due to technicalities Laughlin could not serve out full terms because state law required serving two consecutive terms as mayor before running for reelection again so he instead served one term consecutively from November 1895 until December 1902 which made him ineligible for re-election again but allowed him to run for commissioner during that time period which he did successfully complete). After leaving office as mayor Laughlin donated all his lands within present day cloquet limits to make way for new development including becoming one of only two people ever elected official – both mayors & commissioners – while living outside township boundaries! Laughlin Park still remains today - approximately 0 acres - within Township Line 2 east of current town center location where much recent development has taken place
