Cloquet was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1857 as an agricultural settlement on the east side of what is now Cloquet Lake. It became a city in 1955 and has since grown to include a large rural area around Cloquet Lake and its six small villages: Big Cedar, Clifton Heights, Cottonwood Heights, Deer Park, Fox Run, and Hampton Roads. It is located about northwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul on Interstate 35W and north of Mankato on State Highway 62/Minnesota State Road 169/ County Road 539. The Cloquet Historic District encompasses approximately . The first settler in what is now Cloquet Township was Ole Hanson who arrived from Norway in 1857 with his family and built a log cabin near present day Big Cedar Creek campground near present day Hammacher's Farm Rd./State Route 61 intersection (now Red Wing Rd.). He name for the township was "Hansonville" after himself and his brother Nils Hanson. In 1863 Ole donated land to establish the town site which today includes most of modern-day Cloquet Township including all but one hamlet or village - Cottonwood Heights - while also donating land to nearby Hennepin County for future use as well as bequeathing cash totaling $10 000 to help finance education for African American farm children when it would become available through state legislation called the National School Lunch Act of 1965 (Pt IX). By 1870 there were over 100 people living in Hansonville with some additional settlers arriving later that year following rainstorms that washed away many barns used by early settlers within Hansonville limits; these new arrivals included Germans Luther Kappeler who arrived from Holland via shipwreck off Long Island Sound on October 30th1871; Isaac Hubbell from Ohio via steamship Pembina November 3rd1872; James Senter from Indiana January 12th1875; John Cavanaugh from Connecticut February 10th1876; Emmett Sheahan September 8th1878; Martin Wirthlin December 16th1880 and Gottlieb Weismann March 1st1881 In 1887 Danish immigrant John Nielsen established himself as a trader at Two Harbors Landing about upstream from modern day Cloquet Lakeshore before trading goods upriver into Republican River Valley until his store burned down in 1862 during a winter storm so he moved his operations ashore where he continued trading until his store burned down again circa 1865 just prior to Minnesota becoming an official U.S colony under President Abraham Lincoln on May 14th 1864 thus ending any further attempts by DenmarkZipelandians residing within our boundaries to establish themselves as separate communities or states outside of Dakota Territory prior thereto thereby fulfilling requirements set forth by Congress pursuant to Stated Laws article VIII section 9 thereof." A post office named Hansonville opened in 1865 when residents petitioned state officials for such an establishment however it closed operation due primarily to lack of demand although mail served remaining citizens until it reopened under current name Claxton about 1925 concurrent with Claxton Farms Inc.'s founding date securing water rights necessary for Village growth). First dwellings erected were logs housed around small creek known then simply as "Big Cedar Creek Campground". Log cabins grew larger over time becoming more popularly known statewide initially dubbed "Hansonville" after self-heirs Ole & Nils Hanson (* note: original spelling may have been incorrect given earlier changes made herein), following flooding which destroyed several homes (& other structures) along Big Cedar Creek shortly thereafter marking beginning chronological beginningof Village development).
