Cloquet is one of the oldest towns inMinnesota and it has been recorded that it is established on December 12th, 1851. Cloquet's name means "place where whales are seen" and this may account for its close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Cloquet was originally a fishing village and as such, had access to both fresh water and salt water resources. The first store in Cloquet was built by John Brown in 1871. By 1880, there were six stores in Cloquet. The first post office was opened in 1865 by J.D Hickey. In 1881, Enoch Beavers donated land to build a school which served the community until 1904 when it moved to what is now called Beaversville Elementary School. In 1907, Aiken Noyes donated land to build an addition to what is now called Main Street which became known as Noyes Park after him. This marked the beginning of an era of growth for cloxton which saw several new businesses come into being including a grocery store (1910), a lumber yard (1912), and finally a pharmacy (1927). Cloquet experienced its heyday during World War II with many residents serving in the military either through their civilian jobs or through service organizations like American Legion Post # 548 (). After the war ended however, local businesses slowly began disappearing one by one leaving cloxton with only two small business owners left-one of whom was Mrs Ethel Schluter who ran her own general store from her home until her death in 1984. In recent years though there have been some positive changes taking place within cloxton- most notably being efforts made towards revitalization which has seen several new restaurants open up within the past few years including The Bluegrass Brewery (), Pizzeria Italiana (), Grilled Cheese Shop (), Turkish Cuisine (), etcetera-. With all these new businesses coming into existence however there has yet to be any real change occurring within clutton's overall demographics or cultural fabric; something that seems likely due largely to historical factors such as limited development opportunities along with present day infrastructure issues that have arisen from shared economic conditions between local municipalities.
