The post office closed in 1954 but remained an important local center for commerce until its closure in 1996. Today, Cloquet remains an agricultural community with some sawmills and other businesses still operating; however, most of its residents are now retired or working elsewhere before returning home occasionally for weekend visits or family reunions. The Cloquet River provides many opportunities for fishing including walleye and crappie; as well as boat rentals and picnicking from late summer through early fall months whenever there are no crowds at nearby lakes or reservoirs.
