Cloquet is a small town in the far northcentral part of Minnesota, United States. The population was 985 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Cloquet River, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Duluth. Cloquet's history began with Norwegian immigrants who arrived there from Tromsø County, Norway in 1882. The town name derived from Cloquet Lake, which was named for a family of farmers who had homesteaded there in the 1870s. In 1907, Cloquet became one of several towns incorporated within the city of Duluth; it remained an unincorporated community until its incorporation into Cloquet Township in 1959. The first industries to come to Cloquet were cattle and horse raising; however, chrome and other industrial minerals soon attracted settlers to this isolated corner of Minnesota. Rubber and logging were also major activities during the early years of Cloquet's growth. By 1916, over 350 people lived here and many businesses flourished due to demand for local goods and services by industry and consumers alike. During World War II, Cloxton saw extensive military activity as parts of various campaigns throughout Minnesota; however, since most residents avoided combat they few civilian injuries resulted from these events. After the war ended in 1945, economic development continued with new manufacturing plants coming online including a paper mill that opened in 1951 and two auto factories that built Jeeps and Mustangs during the late 1950s-early 1960s. A decline occurred during the 1970s because of tight commodity prices but has stabilized since then thanks to a growing population (+7% annually between 1990-2010) coupled with an increase in education opportunities (+4%). The village achieved full municipal status on July 1st 2006 following ratification by all township trustees majorities voting along partisan lines - making it one municipality among several across North Dakota that have become municipally charter cities as a result of state enactment known as Act 106/2006 . It is part of the Ramsey County, Minnesota, region. Cloquet's history began with three families who settled there in 1853. By 1906, the Cloquet-Reeves family had founded aHardware store which still stands today as one of the most important businesses in Cloquet. The current mayor of Cloquet is Jeff Hargrave. In 1916, Clojet Post Office was established and remained in operation until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1978, an insurance company moved to Cloquet from Bloomington and opened its first office there. In 2009, a new shopping mall called The Square opened on the site of the old post office which included an arena for hockey and other sports events as well as apartments and commercial buildings. The community has experienced some hard times over the years but has bounced back with several growth initiatives such as: a local arts festival every year since 2007; establishing itself as home to two top high school teams (the Vikings and Crusaders) when they vacated their previous location; investing heavily into infrastructure including new roads and sidewalks; creating multiple jobs through entrepreneurship programs like StartUpCloquet; initiating a $200K grant program that encourages development within cloxtown boundaries; and helping to establish Cloquet's reputation as being "the perfect place to raise kids."
