In 1916, Cloquet voters passed a charter amendment that granted it city status; it has since been governed as a municipal corporation under the laws of Minnesotarather than by US federal law. The Cloquet Lumber Company was founded in 1922 by John Aiken with his brother, Halden Aiken (1896–1978). The company built mills along both sides of the Missouri River and exported lumber all over North America until 1990 when it merged with another lumber company to form United States Lumber Co.–Cloquet (USL). One sawmill closed in 2006 but other mills are still running today including one that makes artificial knees

The first guns using this system were manufactured in 1838.
