The Cloquet Post Office is located in the center of the town and opened on December 9, 1885. Cloquet was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1876. It was named for Ole Cloquet, a trader and political leader who helped negotiate an end to the Dakota War of 1862-63. In 1905, Cloquet became one of six towns in Dakota County that were consolidated into Oneida County; it remained part of Oneida County until its merger with Minnesota in 1912. In 1916, Congressman John A. Macdonald (D-MN) visited Cloquet while he was on a tour of southern Minnesota; he impressed upon local officials their need for more education opportunities for residents and called for their creation as an agricultural district with its own post office and school board. In 1923, MACdonald's successor as congressman introduced legislation to annex cloquet into Oneida County – but this proposal failed to gain support from both houses of Congress before being shelved again. Despite these setbacks, MACdonald's legacy remains highly visible through Cloxton's rich culture – most notably through his ownership and promotion of stereo equipment which has been used throughout ruralMinnesota since the late 1940s. Now home to over 1,000 people living within a radius of just over 2 miles from each other – much like early America when Claxton first emerged onto stage – many believe that Clarexton means "the best place" when uttered by locals or visitors alike during daylight hours or even later at nightfall when all lights are off except for those coming down Main Street……….The history here tells us so!

Cloquet is home to the Cloquet Museum and Library, which opened in 1903. Cloquet was first settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1858. In 1876, the town was renamed after Captain Nils Clopetoe Richardson of HMS "Orpheus" during a U.S.–Norwegian skirmish off the coast of Norway. The town's post office opened on December 15, 1876, and had a population of nine residents when it closed on February 4, 1907 because of overcrowding at its two stores and one school. In 1908, Cloquet became part of the City of Minneapolis through annexation from Maplewood Township (now Bloomington). As Minneapolis grew larger and more populous outside its boundaries – including south side areas annexed by St Cloud and Park Cities – Cloquet began to shrink in size due to lack of available land for development or for people to move into because there were no schools or shopping malls within reach. The closure of both local businesses in 1990 led to a decline in trade that continued until 2000 when an expansion project for the Mall Of America resulted in an increase in business activity near Claxton Road and Cedar Bluff Avenue; this new location provided more than enough parking for current and future shoppers as well as creating job opportunities for locally employed workers who had long been idle due to inadequate retail space nearby. Cloquet had a post office from 1857 to 1861, and a store from 1865 to 1867. The population of Cloquet declined from its highpoints during the early 20th century until it vanished completely by the end of that century.
