Cloquet's name means "place where there are clovers." The first settler in this area was Jonas Cloquet, who came to this area in 1837. In 1870, George Sibley established a sawmill and millrace here which still operates today. Cloquet likely began as an agricultural community because of its location on the Mississippi River and its access to water resources. Dairy farming was the dominant industry until the early 20th century when other crops became more common; however, dairy production still remains a significant part of Cloquet's economy today. In recent years, Cloquet has seen growth in retail and services sectors due to its proximity to Interstate 35W and I-94 corridors as well as its exposed natural resources such as coal mines and oil refineries. Today, Cloquet is a vibrant community with many cultural attractions including two annual music festivals and a literary festival that attracts international authors from around the world. Its nightlife scene features several bars and clubs that offer nightly revelries for locals and visitors alike. There are also several shopping centers situated throughout town that provide local businesses with customers; however, one of the most important economic engines for Cloquet is its agriculture sector which employs over 60% of the town's workforce including major players such as Kroger Co., Coca ColaCo., PepsiCo., Ford Motor Company,, Classen Grain Refining Co., etc..

Cloquet is located on the east side of the Great Lakes region and is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Cloquet was founded in 1868 by Danish immigrants as an agricultural community near what is now Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century as railroads brought agriculture to Cloquet from across America. In 1900, Cloquet became a city when it joined Minneapolis and Saint Paul; it had a population of just under 100 people when it merged with those cities. The Cloquet Manufacturing Company was founded in 1916 by brothers Prentice and Maurice Jennings as a manufacturer of electronic equipment for farmers and other rural residents throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin. The company went bankrupt in 1978 but its products continue to be sold today through companies such as Cray Inc., Vector Scientific Corporation, National Semiconductor Corporation, Toshiba Electric Co., Panasonic Corp., Mitsubishi Electric Motors Company, NEC Electronics North America Inc., Analog Devices Corporation and many others. Cloquet has one high school: Clarkston High School which opened in 1963 after being built on land donated by local farmer Noble Hines Sr.. The school closed in 2006 due to economic conditions but reopened under new leadership two years later as Cloxton Middle School with grades 6-8. In 2007-2008, Clarkston Highlanders won state championships in softball (Class AAA) and girls' golf (state semifinalist). They also won the first ever state championship title for Claxton MSL Soccer team which they hosted against Loyola University Chicago who were then coached by Bobby Wood who later led USMNTs to their first World Cup win in 2006!
