In 1857, residents voted to rename themselves after Captain George Cloquet who had fought during the Mexican-American War as a member of the Ulysses S Grant’s cavalry brigade under General John A. Macdonald (1812-1865). In 1912, local businessman Wirt Jarrell donated some land to build a dam which later became known as Jarrell Dam Park; today it contains several swimming pools, a playground and public trails surrounding it. In 1925, developer Wallace Ladd donated additional land to create Clopetown Lake which still retains its name today despite being home to only five homes since 1975 when it was drained following severe flooding caused by Hurricane Betsy (which made landfall just north of Claxton on August 17th). Today, Cloquet remains an active community with close ties to its farmers and fishermen - many of whom continue to operate their businesses today within the boundaries of their families' homes.. Cloquet was a small town in the Great Lakes region of Minnesota, United States, until it was absorbed into the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area in 1961. The Cloquet post office operated from 1871 to 1892. The Cloquet community formed around a Methodist church and schools that opened in 1872. A railroad depot served as the town's center and store until 1900. The first school teacher, Mrs. Crouch, taught at the school on Main Street for one year before opening her own school in 1876. Cloquet had a population of 3381 in 2000 census; it had fallen to 2239 by 2010 census. The decline reflected both economic factors and changes in family life: In 2000, only 20% of Cloquet residents were married; by 2010, that figure had increased to 50%. In addition to its early years as an agricultural center, Cloquet also became known for its production of cheese and other dairy products during the late 19th century and early 20th century. During World War II, Cloquet became home to two U.S.-based military airfields: Dowd Air Force Base (later called Dyess Air Force Base) on Long Lake Road east of town and Minnetonka Army Ammunition Plant (now Fort Snelling National Military Park). After 1945, many businesses closed down due to difficult postwar economy conditions: Post Office moved out of town altogether after 1951; local manufacturing stopped entirely after 1957; department stores such as Sears pulled out of the area following semiconductor industry consolidation beginning in 1949; grocery stores closed down between 1956 and 1960; then there was significant decreases in population with few new buildings being built until 1990 when development resumed with a new elementary/secondary school building downtown which has since been replaced by another housing project taking over much of what once comprised the original shopping plaza including most of what used to be customer space behind the old bank building across from First Bakery
