The Chaska Mennonite community first settled in the area around Chaska Creek in 1857. A post office called Chaska was established in 1859, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1898, a railroad line was built through the area and Chaska became an incorporated town. The town grew rapidly during the early years of World War II because of its proximity to military bases and factories; however, it soon declined after the war ended. By 1970, Chaska had shrunk to its present size. In 2000, Chaska voters passed a measure authorizing city annexation into neighboring Ramsey County; this resulted in the village of Maple City becoming the new county seat.
