Chaska is a town in Chaska County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 528 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The name "Chaska" is derived from Dakota (Sioux) and Anishinaabemowin (Cheyenne). The first European settlers in what is now Chaska County were French fur traders named La Salle and DuPont. They arrived in 1819 and spent two years exploring the area before leaving for their new post on the Red River near present day Minneapolis. In 1824, Pierre Laclède established a trading post along the east side of the Mississippi River on what is now Chaska Street in Chaska. After two years of trading with Native Americans, Laclède abandoned his post because he found no valuable materials to be had there. He returned to France but died soon after returning home. His son, Pierre-Jacques Laclede, continued to trade with Native Americans until he founded Saint John's Fort on Coon Rapids Creek in 1827 as an outpost against possible Sioux attack from beyond the river banks. In 1840, Pierre-Jacques' grandson Jean-Baptiste Laclede sold Saint John's Fort to Abraham Lincoln for $10 worth of goods that had been trader taken by Chief Black Hawk during araid of 1862 led by Major General Andrew Johnson into central Minnesota during the Indian Wars Lincoln used Saint John'sFort as a base from which he conducted raids into northwestern Minnesota during his campaigns against hostile Native American tribes such as Menominee and Ojibwe In 1868, Chaska was laid out as a town site when it became apparent that Twin Cities would becomeincreasingly large due to its location at one end of Lake Superior and its access to water via rivers flowing through Wisconsin andMinnesota
