As the first white settler in Chaska, Minnesota, John L. Chaska helped create a new town on the river bank. He called his town Chaska after his home state of Iowa. In 1858, he erected a log cabin and started a sawmill. By 1860, Chaska had a population of about 20 people. In 1872, the railroad arrived in Chaska and began to bring settlers to the area. The railroad made farming easier and made it possible for people to commute to work in Minneapolis or St Paul. By 1890, there were 100 residents living in Chaska. In 1912, construction began on the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul. The building was completed in 1914 and served as the state capitol until it was replaced by the current building in 1985.
