In 1862, the U.S. through the militia implemented a series of raids into Dakota Territory in an attempt to stop Indian attacks on white settlers. One such raid led to the engagement between U.S. Cavalry and Sioux Indians at Washburn Heights near present-day Champlin, MN on October 25th. The cavalry was able to rout the Sioux and capture 10 warriors while claimingly killing 3 others, including their leader, Red Cloud. This action is considered one of the most significant battles in Minnesota history and helped solidify United States control over this area
Champlin is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It was founded in 1851 by John Champlin and his wife, Mary, as the townsite of Champlin Township. The original name of the town originated from a Dakota Sioux word meaning "place where there is plenty of game." In 1887, the Champlins donated land to make way for an agricultural college that eventually became University of Minnesota. The Champlins remain involved with their community and ranching operations to this day. Champlin's ZIP code is 55916. The population as of 2010 was 1,829 residents. The history of Champlin began with John Champlin who settled in what is now Chamdin Township on the banks of Clearwater River in 1851. He operated a ferry service between his farmstead at present-day Chamdin and points north and eastward until about 1870 when he sold his property to James Prentice Cooke for $2,500 cash plus 10 acres (40 hectares). At first, only men were allowed to cultivate corn; however, soon women joined in and started raising livestock as well. In 1861, Cook sold additional property including two mills site located on both banks of Clearwater River for $3,000 cash plus 20 acres (80 hectares). One mill was built by Andrew Jenson while the other by David Hackett within three years after Cook's sale which made it one of the first industrial sites west of the Mississippi River! In 1887 Drury College opened its doors at what are today known as Eastman Hall and Administration Building on Main Street Northeast in what would become known as downtown Champlin thanks to donation from Mrs. Anna Loring Chalmers Dupuis - daughter-in-law selection No 2 on December 6th 1886! Classes commenced on January 8th 1888 undergraduate students from Duluth acquired skills necessary for their new educational opportunities starting with teachers’ aid taught some classes without having any formal qualifications! Mr./Mrs Ethel Averill Chalmers Dupuis provided support services through her employment with Stroud Glass Works Company which had been established adjacent to Eastman Hall just prior thereto!! A beautiful addition to our downtown skyline happened when First National Bank moved into their new building across from Eastman Hall – providing banking services during those early days!!! Today we enjoy easy access Interstate 94 traffic heading into Minneapolis/St Paul airspace etc., all because our long time friend & neighbor First National Bank decided they wanted “a piece” in our already thriving cityscape!!!! They have left us behind but that doesn’t mean we can’t continue making History together!!!!!

Champlin is a town located in the U.S. state of Minnesota, with a population of 614 as of the 2010 census. The name comes from George Champlin, who led a wagon train through the area in 1851. Champlin was platted in 1858 by Germans and Swedes who had founded the city of Rochester, Minnesota, about 25 miles to the east. The first post office in Champlin was established on May 1, 1860. The community developed slowly until after World War II when it grew rapidly due to several factors including agriculture and manufacturing opportunities brought about by military production plants at nearby Army Ammunition Plant Number One and two adjacent factories known as "the Twin Cities". As early as 1951, Champlin had become an element of statewide United States history when its citizens ratified a resolution recognizing July 4th as American Independence Day. In 1969, Champlin's first fire hall opened and served for over thirty years until it was replaced by another building in 2003 which still serves today. Champlin is also home to one of North America's largest cheese stores operated by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF).
