Burnsville is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 24,515 at the 2010 census. The Burnsville-Mallard Industrial Park is located in the city. It includes an area of 9 square miles (23 square kilometers). The first permanent settler in what is now Burnsville was Alexander McNaught. He and his family arrived from Canada on October 11, 1854, and built a log cabin near present day Main Street. McNaught died in 1855 without any children to take up the new land and the property passed to his brother John McNaught who married Jane Hennepin in 1857. In 1865, George Eastman donated 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of eastward extension of Uptown Road to create what is now downtown Burnsville. A post office called "Mallard" was established here on November 3, 1865. On May 15, 1870, a store named "Eastman's Store" opened at Fourth and Main Streets after fur trader Alexander Eastman bought land here from John McNaught for $100 (). The first town meeting held in this new town was on July 21st & 25th of that year pursuant to ordinance #2 which provided for township government by aldermen with six members elected at large; each ward electing one member per three years; election of trustees by popular vote; assessment and collection of taxes by commissioners appointed by governor; fire insurance; night watch duty for schools authorized by state legislature as part of compulsory school attendance law No. 151 ; two blacksmiths licensed free within limits prescribed by state legislature when agrarian society formed January 1st 1863.; public library opened August 8th 1863 under direction of DWMH.(source: MNLINKS website - http://www2a1xsn1b3l7eo5vu9c5cucyvhgardkuiz0d7/) In 1872 Nicollet County was created from Ramsey County and Burnside became part of Nicollet County . Nicollet County had no townships . When county boundaries were redrawn following statehood there were only a few small villages left so Burnside got included again . In 1916, the city of Burnsville was incorporated, and in 1924 the township of Burnsville was established. In 1970, the township was merged with the city to form Burnsville-Hennepin County.
