The city also experienced some economic prosperity due to its proximity to Minneapolis and other major metropolitan areas. After the war, however, burnside lost much of its significance as a commercial center due to suburbanization and other factors. Since the 1990s, Burnside has been experiencing rapid gentrification and redevelopment which has caused many of its longstanding businesses and residents to move out or be replaced by more affluent people.
