The Burnsville, Minnesota area was first settled in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants. The town was named after Captain John Burns, a U.S. navy officer who had served in the polar expeditions of 1820-24 and 1829-30. Burnsville began to grow rapidly during the mid 1800s as a result of its position as an important railroad junction and its strategic location on the route between Minneapolis and St Paul. In 1907, the city became incorporated as a municipality with a population of over 50,000 people.

Burnsville, Minnesota is a city located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 9,641 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1838 by John Burns and his family. The current form of government for Burnsville was established in 1892 with the Mayor being an elected official and aldermen subject to popular vote. In 1916, the City of Burnsville annexed the Town of Stonington which had a population of 1,000. This annexation created a new city government structure for both cities which still exists today. The first post office in what is now Burnsville opened on December 5th, 1838. In 1862, James Ketchum settled in what is now Burnside and named it after himself as he felt that “Burnsville” would become associated with him rather than Detroit (the original name). One year later, on January 15th 1863, the village ofburnsville came into being when it was organized from land donated by John Burnett. In 1868-69 US Senator David Wilcox visited Burnsville on business and noticed how well-off people were doing thanks to their good ol' American system of government (free speech). He asked some farmers if they wanted to buy more land so that he could provide competition to European farmers who were controlling most of Michigan's farmland at this time. A group led by Captain George Stephenson acquired 1/4 acre(s) from Major Augustus Lyon for $200 each – this began what would be known as Stephenson's Grant program which provided new farming land to poor farmer families throughout the Midwest via purchase or donation
Burnsville was founded in 1851 by A.J. Burns and his parents, John and Mary Burns. The first post office in the town was established in 1859, and the present building was built in 1907. In 1865, the Minnesota Legislature granted a claim to land east of the Mississippi River to A.J. Burns for $10 per acre. The Burnses soon began to settle this area, and they named their farm "Bald Hill" after their father's bald head from early childhood memories of being showered with snow during winter walks around Bald Hills Cemetery on his family's property near Minneapolis. In 1902,burnsville had a population of about 100 people; by 1910 it had increased to over 400 people. At that time, the Burnses began developing what is now downtown Burnsville into an active community with stores and a library which served as a meeting place for business leaders from surrounding townships. In 1914, they donated land north of downtown for a city hall which became home to the first municipal government in Minnesota. In 1920, construction began on what would become one of Burnsville's most important commercial districts - Third Street between Ames Avenue and State Boulevard - which quickly emerged as one of its most important economic engines since its inception as a small town." Third Street has been called "the spine of downtown" because it provides both pedestrian access from all directions (including upstate) as well as vehicular access to many businesses along its length throughout much of its history." The current third street corridor reflects this history by hosting several restaurants/bars/cafes/marketplaces/, two high-rise buildings used by local governments (Municipal Court Building & Municipal Services Building), several blocks of retail space (including several anchor stores such as Sears & JCPenney),and two concentration areas containing numerous small businesses - One at Second Street NE and one at Fourth Street SE - making it one of busiest shopping corridors in town today
