There are also several small business owners who have built successful businesses based primarily on their own efforts rather than depending on prevailing winds outside forces

Burnsville was founded in 1872 by John Burns and others as a sawmill town on the confluence of the White and Mississippi Rivers. The town became an agricultural center after production of wheat, corn, soybeans, and other crops increased during the late 19th century. In 1920, Burnsville incorporated as a city under the name of Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The first electric light bulb went on in Burnsville on October 3rd 1897 by Elias Sperry and his wife Jennie Neeson Sperry with their infant son Julius using Edison's filament incandescent lightbulbs from their home. As more homes were built in Burnesville during this time period there was an increase demand for electricity to power these new dwellings which led to construction of Burke Electric Light & Power Company's first generating station near downtown Burnsville in 1912 which provided power for many local businesses including Griggs Drug Store, Waffle House and First National Bank building still standing today! During World War II both city ordinances prohibited discrimination against Japanese Americans living within city limits so all citizens were required to register with the military authorities prior to being allowed into any buildings or services not specifically exempted (such as grocery stores) even if they did not serve in combat! In 1957burnsville annexed what is now Maplewood which made it one of only 2 cities nationwide that had such authority! This annexation resulted from a referendum held on November 3rd that year in which over 60% of residents voted yes! A year later on December 6th 1957 voters approved moving City Hall from downtown to Maplewood making it one stop shopping for all municipality related needs!! Additionally Maplewood would become home to our present day Police Department Headquarters until moved out again following voter approval for a new facility at Fifth Street & Lyndale Avenue in 1978! Some notable events that have occurred throughout our history include: -John Fenton becoming our first Mayor when he took office on January 1st 1969 after winning over 50% of the vote against challenger Norm Rice; he served until his death on February 17th 1993; -The opening night show at Nicollet Mall featuring internationally famous rock band Janis Joplin; she had just moved back east from Chicago after years living near Stroudsburg PA where she had started her music career; -First professional football game ever played when we hosted Rockford Thunderbirds vs. Duluth East Stars at TCF Bank Stadium May 7th 1974 followed by halftime show headlined by Eddie Vedder with Pee Wee Crayton opening up proceedings; also featured Donny Hathaway playing special guest artist;; -Stroudsburg native Donna Summer recorded her very debut album “Featherweight” at MCA Recording Studios here while we continue operations as Stroudsburg Record Plant producing her follow up LP “A Kind Of Magic” released June 30th 1977 produced by Dick Wagner who would go onto produce some future Stroudsburgatinum stars such as David Bowie ; finally starting production operations once again on September 25th 1978 after most major equipment relocation inside newly built facilities….the old MCA Studio Building still stands today housing various offices/warehouses used by our current City Manager’s Office…..
