Burnsville is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 34,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County. The name "Burnsville" was given to the community by General Lew Wallace in 1881. The first settler in what is now Burnsville was James Armstrong who arrived on December 17, 1836 from Illinois. By 1840 there were 10 settlers in the community and by 1851 there were 20 residents. In 1861, a post office called "Cedar Rapids" was established in Burnsville and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1870, a sawmill and grist mill were built near the present day intersection of Superior Avenue and Third Street. This milling business continued until 1901 when it merged with another company to form the Minneapolis-St Paul Railway Company which became part of the Chicago Great Western Railway System after that railroad's acquisition by American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T). The first schools were built as one school district; Burnside School District No 1 started teaching on October 15th, 1865 with 3 classrooms and 100 students under Mr. Jurgensen’s direction for 2 years only! On February 6th, 1870 Blissfield Township organized with a population of 25 people when they voted 4 to 1 to incorporate into Hennepin County as well! On March 3rd Burnett Cemetery opened its doors to bury pioneers who had died during their pioneer days including Mrs Hastings & 5 children of Capt James Armstrong! Hennepin County Judge Samuel Jorgensen supervised all proceedings which included swearing-in ceremonies for officers/council members etc…. On November 8th 1870 word spread through town about an election being held for sheriff so 2 men – Sam Lowry & Wm Smedley – went out to caucus & returned home before polling started at 7 PM!! They reported back at 11 PM stating “We have not seen any candidate yet but we will go ahead regardless”!! What an exciting time this must have been for everyone involved especially considering that Mr Jorgensen wasn’t even born yet! Brownstonia Grove Cemetery opened its doors on May 21st following much discussion between Captain Armstrong’s widow Eliza & local farmers over land available for burial!!! The original town plat showed 4 blocks wide streets on each side of a square main street running east-west flanked by two other squares each containing 8 acres (3 ha) of farm land!!!! There are still some interesting remnants remaining today such as Burnett Elementary School located just south of downtown or small businesses located along Superior Avenue such as Haircuts Unlimited or Pizza Place…..It really does seem like nothing has changed since then huh?

A Brief History of Burnsville, Minnesota Burnsville was founded in 1854 by David and Sarah Burns as a small farming town in the extreme northwest corner of Minnesota. The first European to visit what is now Burnsville was the French explorer Pierre Le Moyne in 1758. The town was founded by fur traders in 1824 and named for General John C. Smith, who had served as the first United States marshal of Minnesota. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century, and by 1900 it had a population of over 100,000. In 1916, Burnsville became the capital of Minnesota and remained so until 1957. During its time as capital, Burnsville experienced rapid growth in commerce and industry, with a number of major new buildings being built including the State Capitol and City Hall. In addition, several important educational institutions were established in Burnsville during this period including the University ofMinnesota (1916), the Minneapolis School District (1892), and the Carlson School of Business Administration (1920).
